  12:00am Leixoes, Portugal
At the mouth of the Rio Douro lies the city of Porto, known mostly for its port wine trade. With origins dating back to the 5th century, there is plenty to see in this town that was named European Capital of Culture in 2001. Stroll the Ribeira neighborhood along the river, explore the Cathedral area, or tour the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river. Savoring a taste of tawny port, tripe and seafood while here is highly recommended.

  12:00am Malaga, Spain
Its privileged location has attracted travellers, merchants, artists and explorers that have left their mark on what is now a cosmopolitan, relaxed and hospitable city. Malaga has an attractive old quarter by its cathedral, two forts, the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, that offer fine views, gardens and museums, and good shopping on its bustling 'avenidas'. It is the gateway to the beaches of Torremolinos, the exclusive clubs and marina of Marbella, Puerto Banus and the hill village of Mijas.

  12:00am Barcelona, Spain
Home to the 1992 Olympics, this cosmopolitan yet Gothic city is a study in contrasts. Take a few extra days to browse the modern shops along the bustling Las Ramblas or explore Barcelona's oldest residential district, the Barri Gotic. And the Picasso Museum is an absolute must-see.

  12:00am Toulon, France
Better known as Frances main naval base than as a cruise port, Toulon has unexpected charm and is all the better for not being a major tourist destination as you can wander through the cobbled streets of its delightful old town untroubled by crowds. Look out for the superb maritime and art museums, the magnificent Romanesque cathedral and Le Marche, where fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables are bought to market every day. Ship buffs also have the bonus of watching the comings and goings of the French warships around the harbour. The best view of the old town and the harbour is from Mont Faron which overlooks both - take the funicular up from Boulevard LAmiral Vence.

  12:00am Cartegena, Spain
This refreshing town on Spain's Murcia coast is a living book of history with its displays of what remains of forts, naval walls, Moorish-influenced buildings, and ruins left behind by the Romans. Small restaurants line the picturesque shores serving marinated octopus and piping hot paellas - perhaps with a glass of wine - to anyone wishing to relax aside the Mediterranean.

  12:00am Gibraltar, Gibraltar
Familiar to most as an adage for strength and permanence, the "Rock of Gibraltar" is a British colony less than three-square miles in area, and one of the most renowned strategic military strong points in the world. The existing ethnic mix of Spaniards, Moors, Arabs and British settlers in the area reflects the diversity of this valuable and eminent crossroad. And the experience of visiting the Rock of Gibraltar will remain with you for years to come, whether you're at the highest point of 1,396 feet or looking up from sea level.
