    Amsterdam, Netherlands
Dutch engineering-its dams, sea gates, and the 19-mile dyke walling out the Zuider Zee-prevent this low-lying country from being reclaimed by the North Sea. The marsh that originally surrounded Amsterdam has steadily disappeared beneath the expanding city, where many of the buildings are supported by an estimated five million wood caissons driven into the mire. Vibrant, fascinating and always alive, Amsterdam is imbued with the quality the Dutch call "gezelligheid." Explore the city's 700-year-old streets, marvel at its stepped-gable houses, cruise down its bustling canals, and browse its colourful flower markets.

Dordrecht is a historic city in South Holland, Netherlands. At the end of the Middle Ages, this was one of the six important trade cities of the County of Holland. Its centre still shows off the rich history of the city. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Kerk ('Our Dear Lady Church') was built between 1285 and 1470. The 65m tower contains a carillon with 67 bells including one weighing 9830kg, making it the heaviest bell in the Netherlands. In the church see the brilliant stained glass windows and especially the modern window dedicated to the guilds of Dordrecht.

  12:00am Rotterdam, Netherlands
The world's largest port of Rotterdam is the perfect starting point for excursions to the cities of Holland. Few cities rebounded as quickly as Rotterdam following the Nazi invasion, which levelled the medieval heart of town, burning down most of it. Today, some of Europe's most bold contemporary architecture can be found amid classic 18th- and 19th-century buildings in this gateway to the Netherlands.
