This ancient city is an exhilarating mix of history, art and intellectual activity. 12:00am 12:00am Calvi, Corsica, France
Your first sight of Calvi will be dominated by the huge 15th century citadel overlooking the town and its cruise port (Quai Landry). Unusually, it is the new town which is nearest, with the more historic quarter up towards the citadel. This makes for a very pleasant walk with lots to see along the way, including the St-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral and the Oratoire St Antoine, before you reach the citadel itself.

A renaissance fort guards the harbour of Civitavecchia, gateway to Rome - one of the world's greatest cities. From its inception in 753 B.C. to the days of its decline, Rome has been the focal point for many of the world's greatest artists, architects, rulers and philosophers.

12:00am 12:00am Olbia, Sardinia, Italy
In a desirable location on the stunning Costa Smeralda, Olbia has been inhabited since the 8th century BC, but a recent archaeological discovery of 24 shipwrecks - two of them from the age of Nero - has landed it in the spotlight. The name Olbia means "happy town", though its past has been somewhat difficult, with the city destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout its history. Of course that makes it all the more interesting, as every empire that came and went has left something of value behind for you to see.

12:00am 12:00am Ciutadela, Menorca, Spain
Menorca's original capital is on the opposite side of the island from Mahon, which the British chose as a capital in the 18th century. The city, situated at the head of a long channel from the sea, has had its share of disputes over sovereignty. Its character reflects the influence of Moorish, Turkish and Spanish rule. Stroll the narrow cobbled streets and find a cafe in which to sit and pass the time slowly, Menorcan-style. Or take a sortie to look at prehistoric megalithic tombs or the fishing village of Fornells.

Familiar to most as an adage for strength and permanence, the "Rock of Gibraltar" is a British colony less than three-square miles in area, and one of the most renowned strategic military strong points in the world. The existing ethnic mix of Spaniards, Moors, Arabs and British settlers in the area reflects the diversity of this valuable and eminent crossroad. And the experience of visiting the Rock of Gibraltar will remain with you for years to come, whether you're at the highest point of 1,396 feet or looking up from sea level.

12:00am 12:00am Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon, the cultural centre and capital of Portugal, is located at the mouth of the Tagus River. The port's strategic location brought about Portugal's great wave of exploration during the 15th century. Trade routes from the east brought rich and varied spices, textiles and foreign influences. Today, the soaring, mile-and-a-half-long 25th of April Bridge greets you as you enter the harbour.
