    Amsterdam, Netherlands
Dutch engineering-its dams, sea gates, and the 19-mile dyke walling out the Zuider Zee-prevent this low-lying country from being reclaimed by the North Sea. The marsh that originally surrounded Amsterdam has steadily disappeared beneath the expanding city, where many of the buildings are supported by an estimated five million wood caissons driven into the mire. Vibrant, fascinating and always alive, Amsterdam is imbued with the quality the Dutch call "gezelligheid." Explore the city's 700-year-old streets, marvel at its stepped-gable houses, cruise down its bustling canals, and browse its colourful flower markets.

  12:00am Geiranger, Norway
The fjord of Geiranger is one of most famous of Norway. Surrounded by mountains reaching over 3,000 feet high, the impressive natural beauty has led some to pronounce it the "most beautiful fjord in the world." To get here, a 60-mile passage leads through sheer, steep cliffs and spectacular views of waterfalls.

  12:00am Bergen, Norway
Bergen is called the "Gateway to the Fjords," as it is a great launching point for a tour of nature's Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord and Geirangerfjord. This city has a wonderful mix of architectural styles that add to its 18th-century charm. And as birthplace of virtuoso violinist Ole Bull and pianist Edvard Grieg, Bergen is considered the cultural capital of Norway.

  12:00am Alesund, Norway
In 1904, a massive fire destroyed 800 buildings in this fishing port. Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II responded with immediate aid, and Alesund was reborn. Not surprisingly, the town was rebuilt in the then-popular Art Nouveau style known as Jugendstil. The result is one of the prettiest ports in Norway. Buildings with elegant turrets and spires can be seen lining the streets of the city centre. Today, the city is one of Norway's most important fishing harbours and the world's largest supplier of Klipfish - dried cod. Alesund's major attractions are the surrounding fjords and the stunning Sunnmore Alps.

The Shetland Islands have a rich Viking heritage with a distinct dialect and culture from mainland Scotland. This windswept, sea-lashed archipelago is a lush green haven for birds. And it also offers some of Scotland's most stunning archaeological remains. Of the 100 islands, only 15 of them are inhabited. Lerwick is its largest settlement.
